Musicman Majesty

This guitar came in with some issues but I had no idea what a massive pain it would end up being.

Someone had worked on the guitar previously and I don’t want to speak badly about anyone but everything that shouldn’t have been done to this guitar was done to this guitar. They had attempted some kind of fret level but the frets were not level and weren’t even crowned. I levelled them and thought that would be the end of it but that was not the case. The nut was cut too low and this is where the other issues began; this is a pain to work on. The nut is compensated so can’t just be swapped for any old nut, also it had been well and truly buried in the guitar so getting out was difficult, in the I had to cut it and collapse it on itself meaning shimming it was not an option. I ordered a new one through the distributor and after TEN WEEKS this shipment came in but the nuts were missing. Brilliant. I managed to order a replacement direct from Musicman and it arrived in days.

Once I had the nut in my hand and after I’d been warned the had changed the design (apparently the original was cut down from the 7 strings version and the new one wasn’t). With some “finessing” I got the nut to fit and completed the setup.

The guitar was also breaking D string for no apparent reason, it seemed to me that the saddle was so high it was putting too much pressure on the string. Time will tell with this one, but I will test daily until the owner can collect.

Setup with supplied 9 – 42 strings, I can’t remember the brand as it was so long ago.
