This Les Paul was bottoming out quite badly. On first inspection the nut was cut very low but a more in depth look found there was no relief on the neck. In fact the truss rod was tightened quite a lot so that it had put the neck in back bow. The frets were quite flat and pitted in places so a fret level was in order, plus a new custom made bine nut.
I could tell the truss rod was tight dues to the fact that Gibson don’t mask the truss rod nut when they paint their guitars, not only was the nut tight but the paint was all the way around the back, where you couldn’t see it. Even with everything off the rod the neck was still slightly on back bow so I levelled the board and did a little fall away from around the 16th fret. This can be quite beneficial, especially with low actions as was the case here.
