A guitar of sentimental value came in with a headstock break. The lacquer had popped off the front of the headstock where the break was and not all of the pieces could be found. There’s obviously a financial limit with a guitar like this, even if there is emotional attachment so I approached the repair from a point of view that it should look as good as possible without breaking the bank.
After the guitar was in one piece again I sanded the front off the headstock back and glued on a black veneer, then I added a new logo and gave it a few coats of satin lacquer. The rear of the headstock was quite tidy and trying to get that to be invisible could prove tricky, especially if the lacquer went through as it looked like there quite a lot of tint in it.
I checked the pickup as the owner said he’d had issues with it but could find no fault.
I gave the guitar a setup and lowered the action. The guitar plays well but the frets are very pitted and a fret level might be possible but I suspect a re-fret is on the cards. For another time…
