The owner of this Strat had installed a new scratch plate and wired up the pick ups themselves. Everything seemed fine but then once all together it didn’t. On inspection I found the cavity had been shielded with copper tape, although it wasn’t actually connected to earth. I remedied the earth but also found that the switch was short circuiting on the copper. You need to be careful when using copper tape for shielding, often it can cause more issues than it solves.
